The orthotics and Prosthetics services refer to the treatment of ailments of the joints and the limbs with the use of comfortable shoes or other devices designed to help maintain proper alignment and provide a range of motion normally missing from the joint. Common disorders for which orthotics and prosthetics services may be required include arthralgia, arthritis, diabetic neuropathy, facial pain, mild to moderate osteoarthritis, migraine, patellar subluxation, shoulder pain, Lupus, multiple sclerosis, wrist hand orthosis, and wrist splints. These conditions can affect any joint in the body but many are located in the lower extremities such as the elbow, knee, hip, and wrist. Some of these conditions can be disabling or painful. They often result in activities requiring prolonged movements of the joint or other parts of the body being limited.

As a result of the widespread availability and affordable cost of these devices, health insurance and government programs for such services are available. States have differing laws regarding coverage, so it is important to understand your coverage requirements before going to your doctor. Many orthotics and prosthetics suppliers also offer Medicare and Medicaid coverage for some patients. Your health insurance provider may cover the costs of your treatments if they are part of a recognized healthcare program.

Before you go to your doctor to discuss orthotics or prosthetics services, be sure to gather as much information about your condition as possible. Take time to learn what your options are. Write down questions you have about your condition and the treatments that you are interested in. Keep notes about the doctor's answers to these questions, and compare them to information that you have collected. This information will help you select the best treatment plan for your needs.

When shopping for orthotics or prosthetics, it is helpful to know which category you fall into. If you are suffering from a physical deformity, you will likely fall into one of several areas. There are four categories of prosthetic devices and orthotics: pediatric, sports equipment, stability and back support. Some people fall into more than one category, but there is a majority who fall into a specific area of orthotics or prosthetics.

In addition to the traditional types of orthotics, there are more advanced types of prosthetics and orthotics. For example, many US POEs now provides Custom Insole Pads. These special units fit right under the foot for custom-made shoe inserts. The inserts make the prosthetic leg  more comfortable and help reduce blisters for the patient.

Specialized footwear is also available by US POE that include Combi shoes (used by pediatric patients), Performance shoes (used by athletes), and Sands shoes (for those patients who suffer from foot pain or disability due to diabetes). One of the most innovative orthotics currently available to treat conditions such as arthritic conditions and spinal deformities is the Ingenuis KWASNiewski clip. This clip system uses continuous positive air pressure to hold the clip in place and holds the deformity in place. This technology holds both the clip and the deformity in place, which prevent further compression and deformity. This clip system holds two deformities at one time and is used in combination with an upper orthotic. It is currently being used in pediatric and athletic orthopedics.
